Dark Knight, The (Dbl BD)

The follow-up to Batman Begins, THE DARK KNIGHT reunites director Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale, who reprises the role of BATMAN /BRUCE WAYNE in his continuing war on crime. With the help of LT. JIM GORDON and District Attorney HARVEY DENT,BATMAN sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham for good. The triumvirate proves effective, but soon find themselves prey to a rising criminal mastermind known as THE JOKER, who thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces BATMAN closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante. Heath Ledger stars as archvillain THE JOKER, and Aaron Eckhart plays Dent. Maggie Gyllenhaal joins the cast as RACHEL DAWES. Returning from Batman Begins are Gary Oldman as Gordon, Michael Caine as Alfred and Morgan Freeman as LUCIUS FOX.

]]>The Dark Knight arrives with tremendous hype (best superhero movie ever? posthumous Oscar for Heath Ledger?), and incredibly, it lives up to all of it. But calling it the best superhero movie ever seems like faint praise, since part of what makes the movie great--in addition to pitch-perfect casting, outstanding writing, and a compelling vision--is that it bypasses the normal fantasy element of the superhero genre and makes it all terrifyingly real. Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) is Gotham City's new district attorney, charged with cleaning up the crime rings that have paralyzed the city. He enters an uneasy alliance with the young police lieutenant, Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman), and Batman (Christian Bale), the caped vigilante who seems to trust only Gordon--and whom only Gordon seems to trust. They make progress until a psychotic and deadly new player enters the game: the Joker (Heath Ledger), who offers the crime bosses a solution--kill the Batman. Further complicating matters is that Dent is now dating Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal, after Katie Holmes turned down the chance to reprise her role), the longtime love of Batman's alter ego, Bruce Wayne.

In his last completed role before his tragic death, Ledger is fantastic as the Joker, a volcanic, truly frightening force of evil. And he sets the tone of the movie: the world is a dark, dangerous place where there are no easy choices. Eckhart and Oldman also shine, but as good as Bale is, his character turns out rather bland in comparison (not uncommon for heroes facing more colorful villains). Director-cowriter Christopher Nolan (Memento) follows his critically acclaimed Batman Begins with an even better sequel that sets itself apart from notable superhero movies like Spider-Man 2 and Iron Man because of its sheer emotional impact and striking sense of realism--there are no suspension-of-disbelief superpowers here. At 152 minutes, it's a shade too long, and it's much too intense for kids. But for most movie fans--and not just superhero fans--The Dark Knight is a film for the ages. --David Horiuchi

On the Blu-ray disc
The Dark Knight on Blu-ray is a great home-theater showoff disc. The detail and colors are tremendous in both dark and bright scenes (the Gotham General scene is a great example of the latter), and the punishing Dolby TrueHD soundtrack makes the house rattle. (After giving us only Dolby 5.1 in a number of big Blu-ray releases this fall, Warner came through with Dolby TrueHD on this one.) One of the most interesting elements of The Dark Knight was how certain scenes were shot in IMAX, and if you saw the movie in an IMAX theater the film's aspect ratio would suddenly change from standard 2.40:1 to a thrilling 1.43:1 that filled the screen six stories high. For the Blu-ray disc, director Christopher Nolan has somewhat re-created this experience by shifting his film from 2.40:1 aspect ratio (through most of the film) to 1.78:1 in the IMAX scenes. While the effect isn't as dramatic as it was in theaters, it's still an eye-catching experience to be watching the film on a widescreen TV with black bars at the top and bottom, then seeing the 1.78:1 scenes completely fill the screen. The main bonus feature on disc 1 is "Gotham Uncovered: The Creation of a Scene," which is 81 minutes of behind-the-scenes footage about the IMAX scenes, the Bat suit, Gotham Central, and others. You can watch the film and access these featurettes when the icon pops up, or you can simply watch them from the main menu. A welcome and unusual feature is that in addition to English, French, and Spanish audio and subtitles, there's an audio-described option that allows the sight-impaired to experience the film as well.

Disc 2 has two 45-minute documentaries on Bat-gadgets and on the psychology of Batman, both in high definition. They combine movie clips, talking heads, and comic-book panels, but aren't the kind of thing one needs to watch twice. More engaging are six eight-minute segments of Gotham Central, a faux-news program that gives some background to events in the movie, plus a variety of trailers, poster art, and more. The BD-Live component on disc 1 is more interesting than on some earlier Blu-ray discs, which could be simply a matter of the content starting to catch up with the technology. There are three new picture-in-picture commentaries, by Jerry Robinson (creator of the Joker), DC Comics president Paul Levitz, and Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.--he's a Batman fan who's made some movie and TV cameos), plus you can record your own commentary and upload it for others to watch. There are also three new featurettes ("Sound of the Batpod," "Harvey Dent's Theme," and "Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard") and two motion comics ("Mad Love," featuring Harley Quinn, and "The Shadow of Ra's Al Ghul"). No longer available is the digital copy of the film (compatible with iTunes and Windows Media, standard definition, download code expires 12/9/09). --David Horiuchi

Review :
Great Film - Buy the Single Disc Version!
What has been said about the Dark Knight cannot be elaborated on - so I won't. The film is muscling its way into my #1 favorite comic movie adaptation of all time.

The reason for my review is in hopes of saving you some money. This double disc Special Edition doesn't deliver the price you pay for it. There isn't even deleted scenes!!! I would save your very hard earned dollars and buy the single disc version and wait for the inevitable ULTIMATE re-release that will come later on down the road.

But nonetheless, a great film - you will not be dissapointed; I just wish the studio would have given a better Special Edition release than what we have here. So enjoy!

Batman channels Plato's Republic
First of all, this is a GREAT film, not just a great Batman film.

Others have compared Christopher Nolan's two Batman films to the Tim Burton Batman films, so I won't repeat their observations. Let me simply say that everything about this movie, from the script to the casting to the CGI to the acting and ultimately the directing is superb.

Now to Plato. The meta-message of The Dark Knight is a meditation on the nature of good and evil, the veneer of civilization, the virtues of principle and the necessity and the danger of bending principle in emergencies, the differences between evil for gain or power and evil for mere destruction and chaos, and the tension between public duty and private loyalty. Finally there is the question of the place for facts and the place for "sacred" myth.

(Caution: this review refers to specific scenes and characters.)

The mafia in Gotham is evil for gain and power. They want money and they want influence...
The Dark Masterpiece Surpasses the Hype
Christopher Nolan has a vision. And whether you agree with it or not, he undeniably completes it in "The Dark Knight"--a vicious, engrossing, overwhelming, intelligent event- film that re-defines 'comic-book-flicks'. In Nolan's grim, dark-depiction of Gotham-City (the crime-ridden hell protected by legendary superhero Batman), the director strives to make everything real (something he began in the well-received "Batman Begins"). He makes it plausible, possible. And yet there's more to it: just as 'Begins' was a dissection of myth, the nature of symbols and heroes, 'Knight' is the escalation of that notion. It's a biblical- confrontation of 'good-and-evil', yet as 'good-and-evil' really exist: a conflict of ideals, something that can't be purely-defined but that is relative to a viewpoint. In Nolan's world, the line of villainy and heroism isn't crossed... it's non-existent. The bad-guys don't see themselves as bad-guys, and as such something so unnervingly-real comes across it might...

Action Flick Aspires to Be Epic
“Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal” is an adventure about demon hunter Zhong Kui, whose specialty is vanquishing ghost-like entities. He’s the Chinese mythological equivalent of an exorcist. In a mission overseen by his mentor, master Zhang, Zhong flees with the Dark Crystal, an object said to contain the spirits of all mortals. This theft is engineered to prevent hell’s soldiers from invading the living world. Zhang helps Zhong develop the ability to shape shift into a powerful ogre, which reveals Zhong’s darker, inner being.

Little Snow is a femme fatale from the netherworld who appears in the guise of lead performer of a female dance troupe. She stirs Zhong’s memories of a one-time relationship when he was a handsome scholar studying for an examination that would propel him toward power. Shown in flashback, these scenes show that Zhong cynically traded in a bright future because of a lost love. Even though Zhong recognizes Little Snow to...

I usually like foreign and mandarin movies but this one seems like it was adapted from original film to an Hollywood one.
It has demons and monsters, gods and half of the movie is special effects and no actors.

I was expecting more martial arts like the traditional mandarin movies but knew to expect the Special effects from watching the trailer, but it was just too much, felt like stealing some of the Avatar idea in a way...

Overall, the sound was great, the picture very good but the special effects were terrible and looked too artificial. Plus, the plot is kind of stupid...

amazing and beautiful
I cannot describe how amazing and beautiful this movie is. It is a love story, an epic puzzle with demons and gods battling, where demons and gods are not what you think, and the human who gets caught in the middle of it tries to do the right thing - whatever that may be in the end. The CGI is seamless, so that you are lost in the story and totally buy into the fantasy. The visuals are stunning in blu-ray. And the music is so good, I'm going to go looking for a CD of it and the translation of the song at the end credits. A drawback is the English is subtitles only, but now that I know the story I can watch more of the movie, without losing a frame. Some I just paused to take it all in. If you are a fan of mythology, this Chinese tale will deliver. If you are not, the action scenes and CGI are all you could wish for. Highly recommended.

Review :
Epic conclusion to Nolan's Batman trilogy
Having been a huge fan of Chris Nolan's previous two Batman films, couldn't wait to watch this when it was released. And The Dark Knight Rises didn't disappoint. The conclusion to the trilogy is fitting for the franchise, for Batman, and for Bruce Wayne (though I have read rumors that Nolan might come back for another film in the series or maybe a Batman/Superman film - hope some of this is true!).

The film starts with a frail Bruce Wayne having pretty much retired and living a private life eight years after he eliminated the Joker. The peaceful Gotham City where police officers feel they will soon be "chasing overdue library books" is rocked by a series of events orchestrated by the ferocious and calculating villain, Bane.

The pace of this film is slightly slower (and heavier) compared to the previous two films, partly because there are a lot more characters in this film, and Nolan being the master storyteller that he is, gives each character enough time in the...
Couldnt wait to add this to my collection!!
I have been a huge Batman fan since I was a kid. From the comics, to the movies, to the cartoons and the games, but I absolutely loved this series the most. This series really hit the darker side of Batman and gave it a little more of a realistic touch. Batman The Dark Knight Rises, in my opinion, made Bane one of the scariest, most intense villains in any super hero movie I've seen in 2012. I think this movie did a great job ending this specific series, and even still it left me wanting more, but I was very satisfied with the ending. It was intense, fun, and even amusing at times. All around I think its a great movie, a great series and for me it was a definite buy! Hope everyone else can enjoy this movie/series as much as I did.

Very good but the first two are both better.
4 Stars. This was pretty damn good but it definitely had its problems. Bane's voice was almost impossible to make out most of the time. The addition of Catwoman was okay but nothing really extraordinary. There was very little screen time for Bale which he probably wasn't happy about so this really came off more like 'Bane and Robin' rather than 'Batman and Robin'. The biggest problem though is the first act.

It really drags and they could have lost about 10 or 15 minutes to tighten up the pace. Once the second act kicks in though, that's when the whole story becomes really engaging. It's awesome how Bane unintentionally 'recreates' Batman without knowing it. There is definitely some repetition of ideas from the first two which is probably why this is the last one but overall it is probably the darkest of the three. This is definitely better than the latest Spiderman.

The criticism about this third chapter not fitting in with the whole series could not be further...

Review :
Great escapism. This film is a hoot.
[Caveat: I have to confess that I'm a huge fan of the Marvel Thor mythology and have read the comics off and on through the years ever since I was a kid. I state that upfront so you understand that my review of this film is viewed through that lens. However, I still feel the film is fun and entertaining for everyone even if you're not that familiar with the character. There are at least three or four things in this film that are worth the price of admission alone.]

I can't imagine that a fan of the character Thor would be disappointed with this film. It builds on all the elements that Kenneth Branagh established in the first film and ups the ante across the board. Everything is bigger: the battles, the cast, the sets, the visual effects, the soundtrack, the entire scope. The costumes are amazing. I wish they looked this good the first time around. And Asgard is incredible. Alan Taylor has brought the eternal realm to life in a way that Branagh did not. It is still majestic...
Dark worlds and great jokes: THOR 2
If you would have told me in 2010, that a Shakesperean director, a hunky Australian, and a tall British TV actor would craft a hugely popular and profitable franchise centered around the Nordic gods...I would have asked what you were smoking. Today, it is clear that Marvel, under the lead of Kevin Feige, has crafted a winning formula that clearly works. The keys to Marvel's box office success include their careful building, relatable characters, and the fact that they are not afraid to mix genres, AND have fun while doing all of it. Thor 2: The Dark World follows this formula to a T (a big T, shaped like a hammer...). But that doesn't matter, because as I said before, the formula WORKS.

Well, not ALL of it works. The scientific mumbo-jumbo (courtesy of Portman and Skarsgard) is, quite frankly, embarrassing, and while Christopher Eccleston's Malekith may look like the badass lovechild of Nosferatu and Legolas, he's far from a compelling villain. This is not to mention a...
Why no Blu Ray + DVD combo?
I loved this movie, but I'm very disappointed that there is no Blu Ray + DVD combo, only a single disc blu ray. For those of us that still collect blu rays, many of us enjoy the dvd to play in the car or on a lap top. I'm hoping this is not a trend for future Marvel Cinematic Universe films.

Director Charles Lamont, one of the most prolific American directors in film history (perhaps best known for the numerous Abbott and Costello vehicles he directed) and “Three Stooges” writer Ewart Adamson imbue their characteristic wit into this lively and comedic murder mystery. Based on Sinclair Gluck’s 1928 novel “The Last Trap,” “The Dark Hour” is a hilarious romp featuring fine performances from, among others, former Miss America Irene Ware and famed gossip columnist Hedda Hopper

a veteran mystery aficionado - till the very end
"Agatha Christie couldn't have come up with a more gripping yarn. Berton Churchill and Irene Ware outdo themselves and do complete justice to their roles. `The Dark Hour's plot is so finely tuned that it baffled me - a veteran mystery aficionado - till the very end."

A Departure for Charles Lamont
Charles Lamont as a director is more well known for his classic comedies and this film is a rare departure for him from his usual Shirley Temple fare. In this effort he tries to create a suspensful murder mystery and succeeds very well. He does so using almost no stars. He's helped along by a very strong script that kept be guessing to the end and the fact that he clearly had more money to work with than most guys of the film noir era. A top notch job all around.

Fast-moving who-dun-it features ex-beauty queen
THE DARK HOUR is a mystery programmer directed by Charles Lamont (he also worked with Abbott & Costello, and did Ma & Pa Kettle and Francis the Talking Mule films).

The story follows a classic format: two detectives investigating the murder of an elderly millionaire are presented with a number of suspects, all of whom have motives for homicide. The movie also diverts from the familiar and expected: the two detectives, one old, one young, work independent of each other and cautiously compare notes. After a second killing occurs, the men decide to join forces to solve the case.

Review :
Another great performance from Charlize Theron in DARK PLACES that's well worth a watch...
DARK PLACES is a drama/mystery about a poor Kansas City family who were murdered 30 years ago. There were two remaining members of that family; one was a girl (out of 3 girls and 1 boy) named "Libby Day" and the other was her brother, "Ben Day" who is serving a life sentence in prison for the murders.
I don't want to spoil the story for anyone because this movie is definitely worth a watch, in my opinion. As usual, Charlize Theron gives an outstanding performance as "Libby" who was a child when her family was killed and is now, 30 years later, still pretty directionless and immature.
There are lots of little sub-plots which also makes this film engrossing and the other actors in this movie play their parts to perfection, as well. This is an extremely well done film and I enjoyed watching every minute of it! I was really surprised that I'd never even heard of this movie. The only reason I didn't give this movie 5 stars is because I felt, at times, that...
Great movie. Would watch again. Twists and turns.
This was a good movie. I had never heard of it till I came a cross it while looking at new releases. I love horror or thrillers. This is a psychological thriller. I liked it very much. It is about a woman who's family was killed when she w as a child. She was the key witness against her brother who was jailed for the crimes. She has lead a hard life and gets roped in to investigating the crime. This movie has many twists and turns. Some are expected some are not. I thought Charliez Theron was a powerhouse like always. I would call it a mystery type movie. Those are hard to get right now days because most twist people have seen coming over and over. I think you'll like this if you give it a try.

Excellent
This movie is based on my least favorite Gillian Flynn novel, so my expectations were lower than for Gone Girl. Turns out this is every bit as good a movie as Gone Girl, if not better. The acting is incredible, not only by Charlize Theron, but by the entire cast. Because the book flashes back and forth in time and among points of view, I worried that the movie would not do the book justice and might make an already complicated story incomprehensible. However, the screenwriter handled this complex story beautifully. Even though I knew the outcome ahead of time, I was enthralled- glued to the screen by the riveting story and performances. Charlize Theron had my total sympathy as Libby Day, whereas I found Libby very hard to like when I read the book. The movie actually has me rethinking my original evaluation of the novel, and I think I’ll reread.

Excellent

Review :
This is not really a rate on the movie itself ...
This is not really a rate on the movie itself, rather than the fact that there was no sound. I even tried logging out and going back into the movie and still had no sound. I'm not sure if this is for everyone, but I could not watch the movie, since there was no sound.

One Star
Digital quality bad, minimal or no volume (could not raise level), definitely not happy with rental.

WEREWOLVES JUST WANNA HAVE FUN
There is a college community and Chace (Cameron White) is one of the students. He is taking literature after failing out of drama. He meets a number of interesting young ladies as he acts weird. There is also a local werewolf community that kills people, a community that came from the Vietnam Timber Wolf- not to ruin it for you, but Eric Roberts has a Vietnam flashback were he has long hair as an American Soldier and he sees a Vietnamese turn into a Timber Wolf.

Now that I mention it, the werewolves are a head scratch. Sometimes they are just plain real wolves. Sometimes they are awkwardly moving CG wolves that look like regular wolves. Other times they are huge classic clay animation wolves. Other times it is just people with sharp teeth who look like vampires.

Chace is a quiet lad who has "the inability not to speak." He meets "The Dawn" (Stasi Esper) who "can see what you're hearing." The subtitle "Pray for sunrise" didn't...
