Review :
The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (Complete Series): 41 DVDs; 105 episodes; 5 DVDs of bonus Special Features.
OVERVIEW:

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. is an American television series broadcast on NBC from September 22, 1964, to January 15, 1968. It follows secret agents, played by Robert Vaughn and David McCallum, who work for a secret international counter espionage and law and enforcement agency called U.N.C.L.E. (United Network Command for Law and Enforcement). The series consisted of 105 episodes originally screened between 1964 and 1968, with the first season in black-and-white, with the rest in colour. Napoleon Solo (Robert Vaughn) was to have been the focus, but a scene featuring a Russian agent named Illya Kuryakin (David McCallum) drew enthusiasm from the fans and the agents were paired. Leo G. Carroll played Alexander Waverly, the British head of the organization (Number One of Section One).

In Season 1, it was against the always very popular “The Red Skelton Hour” from CBS, and the rating was quite poor, with the show almost cancelled. When the show was...

I purchased the briefcase the first year it came out. A from me-me Christmas gift! It's terrific!! While it looks like all of the bonus features are listed in the box set description, I know one that is not: David McCallum's home movies. They'er great! He took his own camera and shot behind the scenes footage of the cast, crew sets and on location. if memory serves, David does the narration. But for those of you who don't want to-or can't spend the $$ on the complete set, can watch MFU on tv. Those of course that get the station ME-TV, can watch it. It's been airing since August/September of last year. As part of their "The Spies Who Love Me" block of shows which also include Mission Impossible and Get Smart.
These air between 10:00p.m.-1:00a.m. on Sunday night. {beginning with MFU at 10:00.)

BUYER BEWARE - but it is a great series!
To be clear, the five stars are for the series itself - while it may seem retro now, it was very influential to those of us who watched it as teens in the mid 60s.

BUT - you can purchase the identical 41 discs new on Amazon for about the half the price of this package. All that is new here IS the packaging - it is a slim format. If that is important enough for you to spend an additional $80, then buy it. But search Man From UNCLE in Amazon and you will see the "brief case" packaging available as new for HALF the price of this item. Same discs - they have not been remastered.

Whichever packaging you choose, the content is what is important, and this is a terrific series!

We're from an organisation called the U.N.C.L.E.
Napoleon Solo (Robert Vaughn) - Suave, seductive, and trained to kill. An American with only one weakness, Women.
Illya Kuryakin (David McCallum) - Mysterious, calculating, and deadly efficient. A Russian with a temper and a great mind.

Together they are the MEN from U.N.C.L.E. (United Network Command for Law and Enforcement) together with their boss Alexander Waverly (Leo G. Carroll). They are highly trained spies with one purpose: to stop evil, and charm their way into our hearts. And their arch-enemy is an organisation called THRUSH (Technological Hierarchy for the Removal of Undesirables and the Subjugation of Humanity). THRUSH is a supra-nation and an antithetical organization to U.N.C.L.E, whose inflexible purpose is to dominate the earth.

One problem though was that Illya Kuryakin (David) is just a co starring actor to the famous Napoleon Solo (Robert), but as the season goes on so does their partnership. Together they have a wicked sense of humor and...
Great News for the Fans from U.N.C.L.E.!!!!
All four seasons are finally here on DVD with plenty of extras. As noted elsewhere each season is packaged in one multi-disc set with a nice 4 page flyer listing the shows and actual presentation dates, as well as commentary on the season. Some here (and elsewhere) have complained about the pastboard briefcase that the full four season set is presented in, but I find it to be clever and handy. If you possibly can, buy all four seasons in one package rather than individually.

The transfers are quite good, much better than the vhs sets that were out many years back. The video and the audio is clean with few drop-outs or glitches noted (so far), but best of all the show holds up well. Those who loved it then will be entranced. Our children may find the show less amazing, as many of the gadgets envisioned then are really now in existence and the Bond series has so far surpassed the 1960's, but for those of us who were there, it is wonderful.

It's a shame that...

After all the legal intricacies, negotiations, and more time than it took to make a commitment to land a man on the moon and then accomplish it - they are finally here - the U.N.C.L.E. dvd's! I must admit that the complete collection is really nicely packaged, the quality of each episode is enhanced with a minimum of blemishes, and the extras are numerous and all-inclusive. The first season set provides some wonderful background with "The Cloak and Swagger Affair". The movie "One Spy Too Many" is also captured as an extra in the second season. The interviews with Robert Vaughn and David McCallum are both wonderful and insightful. THRUSH had better take note; "bad guys" of the world - time to go underground after forty years, cause' the boys are finally back in town.

Review :
What is more patriotic than asking questions of your governors??
This is perfect for the person whom went out and bought the 911 commission report at their local book store and said thats that. There are glaring omissions in our governments time by time analysis of that day. Why? I don't know & this DVD wont tell you. It just gives you a list of Commonly asked questions relating to 911, and outlines each question in detail for your own introspective thought. It does not tell you what to think, it just asks the questions you yourself probably all ready asked but they do it in concise clarifying detail. If your looking for a conspiracy movie this is not it, it only asks really, really great questions that as of yet have not been answered.

Extras go beyond the feature questions
This dvd has three main sections:

1. the 33-minute title feature,
2. 35 minutes of additional interview footage with the nine people named below, and
3. 49 minutes of a live panel discussion following the April 21 2003 screening of the film at the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco.

Questions presented in the title feature are:

1. To what extent should airlines have been prepared for 9/11?
response from Mary Schiavo, Aviation Disaster Attorney,
1:55 in feature plus 3:14 in additional interview footage

2. What did the Bush administration know and when?
Michael Ruppert, Editor, From the Wilderness
1:58 plus 3:51 additional

3. Why wasn't the US military able to intercept the hijacked planes?
Nafeez Ahmed, Author, The War on Freedom
1:49 plus 5:22 additional

4. How did the administration respond to the failures of the military and intelligence agencies on 9/11?
David...
Limited But Relevant
9/11 Press for Truth is better, but this DVD is very worthwhile. It opens with George Soros being concerned about the dangerous foreign policies and actions of the Bush Administration, and then moves directly into asking 9 people 11 questions (generally one person per question). Here are the questions in abridged form:

1) Should airlines have been prepared?
2) What did Bush Administration know, and when?
3) Why wasn't the US military prepared or able to respond?
4) How did Administration respond to military failure?
5) Any ties between US Intelligence and the terrorists?
6) Were there plans for a war in Central Asia before the Bush election?
7) Is there an underlying motive for putting US military into Central Asia?
8) Is there historical evidence that US Government is willing to kill its own citizens and blow up its own ships and buildings as a pretext for war?
9) How has the US Government reaction to 9-11 impacted on civil...

Jogo do Pau is a unique and living European martial tradition.

It is a hybrid system that merges many historical martial skills and concepts - including outnumbered combat - with the specificities of its main weapon of choice: The staff - A most challenging weapon that teaches fencers how to protect one's hands in the absence of cross-guards.

Jogo do Pau's unbroken lineage of several centuries culminated in a fully structured curriculum that makes training easy.

The art's take on combat context can be helpful to HEMA's trainees & researchers, supplying them with a guiding blueprint of Europe's noble fighting arts.

This DVD, on the evolution of Jogo do Pau, covers how technique and tactics developed over time as an adaptation to a variety of combat circumstances, e.g. how outnumbered combat and duelling against opponents of different traits brought about specific adaptations regarding combatants' selection of:

1 - Starting position
2 - Parrying technique
3 - Defensive footwork
4 - Counter attack selection
5 - Striking technique

The authors also share a thorough and straight forward presentation on how these concepts pertaining the evolution of Jogo do Pau apply in interpreting historical weapon manuals.

This presentation successfully covers a practical top-down interpretation of the combat tactics that make up German longsword, thus promoting the optimization of fencers' tactical decision making.

Review :
From battlefields to Duelling - review
I recently watched the DVD ‘FROM BATTLEFIELDS TO DUELLING’, the evolution of Jogo do Pau by Luis Preto. Having had the pleasure of being taught by Luis in the past and having read quite a few of his books on different training subjects, I knew the dvd would be an educational, well researched work, and it is. Whilst going through situational aspects and origins of basic stances, attacking and defending motions, the evolution of JdP is systematically brought to screen in five parts, with a clear summery at the end of each chapter.
A good understanding of the interrelationships between guards, attacks and parries helps in creating a good perception of timing and distance. In such the dvd proves useful to practitioners and instructors of weapon arts, both modern and historical: the mentioned correlations are well explained and lead to simple pointers in the making of tactical decisions.
The pros and cons of stances and attacks are clearly demonstrated and in addendum...
Great source of information for anyone in HEMA
“FROM BATTLEFIELDS TO DUELLING: The evolution of Jogo do Pau” is a great DVD that anyone in HEMA should be interested to purchase.

What we have here is a living European martial art that is taught by not only someone who is passionate, but also very educated in the field of sport sciences and coaching. He has a number of publications, all in modern English, and to boot he’s alive.

So now back to the DVD, it goes through JDP’s development as a martial art. What I love about this DVD is that Luis goes over reasoning behind tactical and technical actions. Luis doesn’t just help develop knowledge on JDP but a working knowledge that can be applied elsewhere.

As a couple bonuses, Luis has included an analysis of German Longsword using a very effective flow chart, and a form interpretation in an outnumbered situation with a bladed staff.

Portuguese Jogo do Pau: a beautiful and effective European, centuries-old, living stick fencing tradition, clearly explained.
I had finally the chance to sit on my sofa tonight and watch your last DVD "From battlefields to dueling". First of all, I want to thank you for all the work and effort you put into sharing with the entire community not only the tradition of Jogo do Pau, but also for your experience and effort in developing a solid educational method.

I am not sure if you faced similar challenges, but I personally found often in old traditions in Italy non defined pedagogic methods, transmitted orally for centuries, sometimes restricted within certain circles. Methods that for the modern practitioner can be difficult to grasp immediately and that often require an actualization with current pedagogic knowledge. Actually some of these traditions have, like JdP, an uninterrupted continuation since medieval age (Sicilian and Apulian stick traditions can be traced back to 1100-1200), and bring with them all their centuries of battles and oral transmission.

Now: coming to the...

Review :
A bizarre and unique sci-fi film
This little movie usually gets lost in the vast crowd of 1950s sci-fi pictures, but it arguably is one of the most interesting. (I find it superior to W. L. Wilder's previous film, the still decent 'Phantom From Space' [see my review].) The aliens' physique and their plans for Earth, the minimal special effects and sets, and the use of stock footage showcase the sheer bizarreness of 1950s cult films - the lack of resources actually enhance the film's unique feel. The invasion-laden theme is common enough, but the way it is articulated sets the movie apart from most of its peers. The crucial scene, i.e. when the hero meets the aliens, is used as a lengthy flashback inserted near the middle of the film; it is only when the hero gets out of his trance/amnesia that the scene is shown. This seemingly innocuous device actually changes the whole dramatic perspective of the movie: in the first half, the hero acts against his own will, while in the second half, all of his decisions are...
B-Science Fiction Alien Movie
This movie has all the trappings of classic B-science fiction movies. There are the cheesy aliens, the hokey, out-sized critters, awful space craft special effects, and lots of stock footage of aircraft that do not match the scenes or each other. In other words, this is great stuff. But wait, there is more! Peter Graves is the star!

Dr. Douglas Martin (Peter Graves) is monitoring test explosions of nuclear weapons from a jet. As Dr. Martin and the pilot are flying around, which is shown by an obvious model performing impossible turns, they see something unusual on the ground. Faster than you can say "I was kidnapped by aliens," their jet crashes into the ground, killing both. But wait, here comes Dr. Martin up to the main gate of the military base. We later found out that those evil aliens saved Dr. Martin so that he could help them learn when the next nuclear test is.

Everyone is suspicious of Dr. Martin because he is acting strangely. When he offers to...
Killers From Space
Combine Cold War paranoia with a pinch of speculative pseudo-science and a dash of radiation anxiety, shake it in a cheap sci-fi tumbler for 70-minutes and you get KILLERS FROM SPACE.

A very young Peter Graves plays the desert scientist studying nuclear blasts and counting the radiation. When his plane crashes after one blast and he's missing for a few days things change. A big, ugly cautery scar over his heart doesn't explain much, either. Of course, nobody believes him when he tells them there's a troop of ping pong ball-eyed aliens living in the caverns in Yucca Flats, poaching our electricity and growing gigantic beetles and rock lizards....

KILLERS FROM SPACE is goofy, and for all of its campy charm pretty slow moving. Graves plays "astonishment" in every key in his repertoire. The alien outfits and makeup aren't very convincing, but they look comfortable. The big bugs look like... well, they look like rear-screen projections with amplified sound...
